The location of the existing Mestia Airport, nestled in a mountainous valley, inherently suggests that any new structure should be seamlessly integrated into the surrounding landscape. The goal is for the new volume to appear as a natural extension of the terrain—a subtle insertion rather than an imposition. This is particularly important because the project site is highly visible from the surrounding slopes, existing roads, and built environment. As such, blending the architecture organically into its context—especially from the aerial perspective, or “fifth façade,” i.e., the roof—is of paramount importance.
The proposed design is rooted in these principles.
All technical, operational, and other support spaces are organized into two groups corresponding to the departure and arrival zones. These are embedded within two artificial hills, forming part of a reimagined landscape. The central terminal hall—visually open and transparent, with an area of 400 m²—is positioned between these two hills. The space is divided into three zones by 2.2-meter-high glass partitions: a 200 m² waiting area, a 100 m² departure lounge, and a 100 m² arrivals hall.
This configuration of relatively small but visually interconnected spaces creates the impression of a large, open hall. Beyond this hall, the view extends unobstructed from the main entrance to the aircraft parking area.
A circular, disc-like roof spans across the two artificial hills, forming the terminal's overhead cover. Its dome-shaped geometry acts as a distinctive visual landmark within the landscape, clearly signaling the presence of the terminal.
